When a special needs pug came to the Michigan Humane Society, he was in bad shape. Mikey’s beginning wasn’t a positive one, and he was nearly euthanized before he got into the safe hands of MHS volunteers.

Veterinarians spotted that the pug was suffering from demodectic mange and glaucoma, which had left him blind and in extreme pain. MHS veterinarians decided that in order for Mikey to be happy and healthy, the best thing to do was to remove the eyes.

After his recovery, Michigan Pug Rescue stepped in help give Mikey a little TLC as he eagerly awaited adoption.

In March, the now 2-year-old pug found a new home with Sabrina Johnson, the district judge for Inkster, MI. He’s adjusting well to his new life.

“I got him from rescue, and he really rescued me,” Johnson said in the video. “He’s just the love of my life.”

Johnson regularly brings the tiny pug to work with her, and he’s bringing smiles to everyone around him.

“When people meet him, they melt. I’ve seen very tough police officers just get down on their hands and knees, just play with him. He brightens everyone’s day.”

And despite his blindness, Mikey is fast learner and rarely bumps into things, Johnson revealed. When he does occasionally bump into things, the pug keeps a positive attitude.

“Sometimes when we’re walking in the park, he’ll get going and run into a tree,” she said. “He simply backs up, shakes it off and keeps moving. He really has taught me about how to live life.”
